HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND UPDATE RESPONDUS LOCKDOWN BROWSER In order to take exams in your Canvas course, you will need to download and use Respondus Lockdown Browser, which is a secure browser that will prohibit you from using other programs on your computer while you are taking some tests.

LockDown Browser is a secure browser that can be used to prevent printing, copying, going to unauthorized URLs, or accessing other applications during an in-classroom online Canvas exam. LockDown Browser is specifically intended for taking Canvas quizzes, not for others areas of Canvas. Here is an introductory video explaining LDB

Installing LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser must be installed to each computer (Windows or Mac) that will be used to take an exam. To install LockDown Browser on your computer:

  1. Shut down all open internet browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  2. Open the installer and follow the onscreen instructions to install
  3. Launch the browser and log into Canvas to confirm your machine isn't running any apps that block your access to the secure browser. You may be asked to quit or 'kill' certain apps that aren't considered secure

Taking an exam or quiz:

  1. Close all programs
  2. Launch LockDown Browser
    a. Mac users: Launch 'LockDown Browser' from the applications folder
    b. Windows users: Locate the 'LockDown Browser' shortcut from the desktop and double-click it
  3. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g., screen capture, instant messaging), choose 'Yes' when prompted
  4. Login to your Canvas course
  5. Navigate to the quiz and select the 'Take a Quiz' link
  6. Once a quiz has been started with LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until the 'Submit Answers' button in clicked

About the LockDown Browser

The LockDown Browser + Canvas is SMU's secure exam management solution that enables faculty to administer online quizzes and exams in Canvas while restricting access on those devices to the Internet, applications, or other networked resources. During an exam period, the test taker's computer or iPad is restricted to accessing the Canvas quiz only. Once a test is submitted, all communications and programs on the device are unlocked and restored. Canvas quizzes are fully encrypted and can only be accessed using SMU Canvas along with the LockDown Browser client application.

LockDown Browser is utilized through an LTI (Learning Tool Interoperability) integration directly within Canvas, SMU's course management system.

The integration with Canvas is minimal, LockDown Browser can be found in your Navigation (click on Settings and choose Navigation tab). Please contact the IT Help Desk for guidance on how best to use LockDown Browser with Canvas quizzes.
